Lavender Essential Oil: Uses, Benefits & How to Get Started
Of all the essential oils on the market, lavender is the one most people try first — and the one they never stop using. It's remarkably versatile, genuinely well-studied, and forgiving enough for beginners. But knowing how to use it well makes all the difference.
At Lavande Farm, we use pure Grosso lavender oil. That means when you open a bottle of our Lavender Essential Oil, you're getting the real thing — harvested at peak bloom, with all the benefits of this ancient remedy.
What Is Lavender Essential Oil?
Lavender essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the lavender plant through steam distillation. The result is a highly concentrated liquid that carries lavender's signature scent along with its active therapeutic compounds — primarily linalool and linalyl acetate, both of which have been studied for their calming, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects.
Top Uses for Lavender Essential Oil
1. Sleep & Relaxation
This is lavender oil's most popular use — and for good reason. Diffuse 5–8 drops in your bedroom 30 minutes before bed, or spritz your pillow with Lavender Linen Spray for a gentle, lasting effect. Linalool has been shown in clinical studies to reduce anxiety and support deeper, more restful sleep.
2. Aromatherapy & Stress Relief
Add lavender oil to your Lavender Diffuser during the workday or evening to reduce perceived stress. Even a few minutes of mindful inhalation — a drop on your palms, cupped over your nose — can interrupt a stress response and bring you back to calm.
3. Skin Care
Blended in two carrier oils, almond and jojoba, lavender body and bath oil can soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and support healing of minor blemishes and burns. Always do a patch test before applying to the face.
4. Headache Relief
A small amount of diluted lavender oil applied to the temples and back of the neck has been shown in some studies to reduce the intensity and duration of tension headaches. Inhaling lavender during a headache may also provide relief.
5. Natural Home Fragrance
A few drops on a cotton ball tucked in a drawer, closet, or car vent keeps spaces smelling fresh without synthetic chemicals. Lavender also has mild insect-repelling properties — a bonus for wardrobes and linen closets.
6. Natural Bug Repellent
Lavender is a natural deterrent for mosquitoes and other insects. Apply diluted lavender oil to exposed skin, or try our ready-to-use Lavender Mosquito Spray for hassle-free outdoor protection.
How to Use Lavender Essential Oil Safely
Dilute before applying to skin. Essential oils are highly concentrated — a safe starting ratio is 2% (about 12 drops per ounce of carrier oil) for body use, and 1% for facial or sensitive-skin use.
Don't ingest. Lavender essential oil is for aromatic and topical use only. It is not safe to consume.
Store properly. Keep your bottle tightly closed, away from heat and direct sunlight. A cool, dark location extends the shelf life significantly.
Less is more. In aromatherapy, a subtle, background-level scent is often more effective — and more pleasant — than an intense one. Start with fewer drops than you think you need.
What to Look for in a Quality Lavender Oil
Not all lavender oils are equal. Many products on the market are adulterated with synthetic linalool or mixed with cheaper oils. Look for oils that are:
- Steam-distilled from true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
- Produced in small batches by the grower
- Clearly labeled with origin information
Our Lavender Essential Oil meets all of these standards — grown and distilled right here in Santa Ynez Valley, so you always know where your oil comes from.
